Research-use-only framing applied throughout in line with Remy editorial standards.
The Epitalon benefits most often claimed (telomere lengthening, slower aging, better sleep and longer life span) come mainly from cell culture and rodent studies, and most of those studies come from one research group: Vladimir Khavinson’s St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology and its collaborators.[1][2] An independent UK team reported in 2025 that Epitalon raised telomerase activity and telomere length in human cell lines, but no study has measured telomeres in animals or people after Epitalon.[3]
Epitalon side effects in humans are unknown: FDA’s 2026 review found no clinical studies of its safety and no adverse-event reports, and it flagged a theoretical cancer concern because the peptide activates telomerase.[4] Epitalon is not FDA-approved, and Remy Research supplies it for in-vitro laboratory research only.
What Is the Epitalon Peptide?
The Epitalon peptide is a synthetic peptide made of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, also abbreviated AEDG). PubChem lists the free base as C14H22N4O9, about 390.35 g/mol, CAS 307297-39-8.[5] Khavinson’s group designed it from the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, a polypeptide extract of bovine pineal gland tissue.[6][7] In 2017 the same group reported detecting AEDG in a pineal polypeptide complex, the basis for calling it a naturally occurring pineal gland peptide; that is a single-group report, not proof that the pineal gland makes it in people.[8]
FDA notes that the peptide circulates under inconsistent names and that published papers often do not say whether they used the free base or the acetate salt.[4]
Epitalon vs Epithalon: Same Compound
Epitalon and Epithalon are two spellings of the same tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly; PubChem lists Epithalon and Epithalone as synonyms of Epitalon.[5] Epithalamin is different: it is the crude pineal extract the tetrapeptide was designed from, and FDA’s substance registry does not treat the two as the same substance.[4] Whichever spelling a source uses, the epithalon peptide is the same molecule. Results from Epithalamin studies, including the long human follow-ups, cannot be credited to the Epitalon peptide.
How the Peptide Epitalon Is Thought to Work
Supporters describe Epitalon as a telomerase activator that stimulates gene expression at the cellular level. No receptor has been identified, however, and an independent 2025 review describes the mechanism as unclear.[6] Three pathways are proposed. The first is telomerase activation: telomeres are the protective caps on chromosome ends, and Epitalon raised expression of the telomerase enzyme in cell culture studies.[2][3] The second is melatonin production by the pineal gland, which is linked to circadian rhythms.[9] The third is gene expression: a small Khavinson-group study reported changes in circadian clock genes.[10] FDA concluded that how Epitalon might regulate melatonin in a living body remains unknown.[4]
Potential Epitalon Benefits in Research
The table lists each claimed benefit, what was reported and the type of evidence. Where a result comes only from the Khavinson network, the table says so.
| Claimed benefit | What was reported | Evidence type |
|---|---|---|
| Telomerase activity | Higher in fetal fibroblasts and normal cell lines | Cell culture (Khavinson + UK lab) |
| Cell division limit | Ten extra divisions in treated cells | Cell culture (Khavinson only) |
| Oxidative stress | Less damage in aging mouse egg cells | Cell culture (independent) |
| Life span | Mixed: small or no change in mean life span | Animal (Khavinson network) |
| Spontaneous tumors | Fewer tumors in several mouse studies | Animal (Khavinson network) |
| Melatonin, sleep | Higher melatonin in some studies, not others | Cell, animal, small human |
Telomerase Activation and Telomere Length in Cell Culture
In 2003 Khavinson’s group reported that adding Epitalon to telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblasts, a type of human somatic cells, induced telomerase activity and telomere elongation.[2] In 2004 the group reported that control cells stopped dividing at passage 34, while treated cells made ten extra divisions, which it described as overcoming the limit of cellular senescence.[11] No independent group has replicated that division result.
The independent replication came from Brunel University London in 2025. In normal epithelial and fibroblast cells, Epitalon increased telomerase activity and telomere length; in breast cancer cells, telomere lengthening came instead through a pathway called ALT. The authors note that telomere length is a biomarker of aging and suggest that maintaining it may contribute to healthy aging; the paper’s main figures were later corrected.[3][12] These are cell culture results; telomere maintenance in a living organism has not been measured.
Oxidative Stress and Cellular Health
Two other independent groups used Epitalon in egg-cell models. A 2022 Chinese study reported lower oxidative stress, fewer spindle defects and preserved mitochondrial function in aging mouse egg cells in vitro.[13] A 2025 Korean study reported a higher bovine egg maturation rate, better embryo development after thawing and telomerase activation.[14]
Anti Aging Effects and Life Span in Animals
Animal and human studies of aging with Epitalon come almost entirely from the Khavinson and Anisimov network, and the life span results are mixed. Female CBA mice treated long term had 5.3% longer mean survival and fewer spontaneous tumors.[15] In female SHR mice, mean life span did not change; the authors reported a longer maximum life span, fewer chromosome aberrations and less leukaemia.[16] In male rats, mean life span “virtually did not change.”[17] In mice prone to breast cancer, treated animals developed fewer and smaller tumors.[18] None of these studies has been repeated by an outside laboratory, so anti aging claims about slowing the aging process or cellular aging in mammals rest on one network’s rodent data.
Melatonin Production, Sleep Quality and Circadian Rhythms
The group reported higher evening melatonin in old rhesus monkeys and higher melatonin synthesis in pineal cell culture.[19][9] A Paris study with the same co-authors found no significant effect on melatonin secretion from the pineal glands of young or old rats.[20] No controlled study has measured sleep quality as an outcome.
Human Clinical Trials: What Exists
Human research on the Epitalon peptide itself is limited to a few small Khavinson-group studies. One that FDA reviewed was a randomised, placebo-controlled study of 75 women aged 40 to 50, mostly night-shift workers, framed by the authors as premature aging of the pineal gland: the tetrapeptide raised a urinary melatonin marker and normalised some circadian clock gene expression, a circadian biology endpoint, and the study did not report safety data.[10][4] The best-known long human follow-up, a randomised comparison in 79 elderly coronary patients, reported lower mortality, a normalised melatonin rhythm and better carbohydrate and lipid metabolism over 15 years, but it used the extract Epithalamin, not Epitalon.[21]
ClinicalTrials.gov lists no completed Epitalon trial; its single matching record, first posted in October 2026, is an uncontrolled, single-group anti-aging study with no results.[22] FDA found no pharmacokinetic data for Epitalon.[4]
Who Did the Research
Of 145 PubMed records that mention Epitalon or its synonyms in the title or abstract, 93 (64%) list Khavinson or V.N. Anisimov as an author.[1] The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation notes that at least half of the papers on Epithalamin and Epitalon are in Russian.[7] Independent work is limited to three cell culture studies and the 2025 review.[13][14][3][6] That concentration is the single most important caveat for any Epitalon benefits claim.
Epitalon Side Effects, Cancer Cells and Cancer Risk
- No human safety data. FDA found no clinical studies assessing the safety of Epitalon in humans and no reports in its adverse-event database.[4]
- Theoretical cancer risk. Telomerase is active in most cancer cells: a landmark study found it in 90 of 101 tumour samples and none of 50 normal tissues.[23] FDA therefore raised a theoretical concern that long-term telomerase activation could help cells escape senescence and become cancerous.[4]
- Conflicting tumour data. The UK study saw telomere lengthening in breast cancer cells, while the Khavinson-group mouse studies reported fewer tumors.[3][18]
- Immune reactions. FDA noted that peptides can trigger immune responses, a risk increased by aggregation and impurities.[4]
FDA concluded that there are no clinical data to support the safety of Epitalon in humans, including whether it would cause harm.[4] There are no long-term safety data.
Regulatory Status: Is Epitalon FDA Approved?
- FDA approval. No. Epitalon is not an approved drug.[4]
- Compounding. FDA’s Category 2 page lists Epitalon under “nominated but withdrawn.”[24] On July 24, 2026 FDA’s advisory committee voted 7–4, with one abstention, to recommend it for the compounding list for insomnia, against FDA reviewers’ advice; the vote is advisory.[25] An FDA interim access policy for certain peptides has been under White House review since October 14, 2026, with no final action yet.[26]
- Other countries. FDA found no approved Epitalon products in Canada, Australia, the UK or several EU countries, no EU authorisation, and no listing in the European or Japanese pharmacopoeia.[4]
- Sport. Epitalon is not named on WADA’s 2027 Prohibited List, but class S0 bans at all times substances without government approval for human therapeutic use, naming peptides among its examples.[27]
- UAE. Epitalon is not a registered medicine. Remy Research sells it for in-vitro laboratory research only, not for human consumption or veterinary use.
Epitalon vs Other Aging Research Peptides
Epitalon is often compared with other research peptides studied for biological aging. MOTS-c is a mitochondrial peptide studied for metabolism; FOXO4-DRI is a senolytic peptide designed to clear senescent cells; DSIP is another neuropeptide linked to sleep. See the MOTS-c research review, the FOXO4-DRI review and the DSIP research review.
What the Research Does Not Yet Show
- Independent animal replication. No life span, tumour or melatonin finding has been reproduced outside the St. Petersburg network.[1]
- Telomeres in living systems. No animal or human telomere-length data after Epitalon exist; the evidence is cell culture only.[3]
- Human pharmacokinetics. None has been published.[4]
- A molecular target. No receptor has been identified.[6]
